[Instrumental]
"When I started the 'By Design' project, I had no intention of making a band. I wanted to write electronic music, like artists like Moby. But I couldn't help writing these heavier, rockier, chaotic, genre-fusing songs. At that time, I hadn't written an album before, so I decided to commit to fully express this creative vision and write the best album I could. And so, 'Spaces' was born."

By Design was originally intended to be a soft electronic project. This is part of the reason why 'Spaces' has such a strong electronic influence.
'Spaces' is a conceptual album that details a man's journey through a relationship, its breakdown and the trauma that follows. In the story, the character receives a message from another planet, telling him that he's destined for something bigger. In 'Lightyears' we hear the story of the character travelling to the other planet to move away from his problems, only to find that his problems have followed him across the universe.
There are many references to TV shows, movies, music and real life references in the album's song names. For example, 'Joe Devola' references a character from Seinfeld, '46 Long' references the title of the second episode of The Sopranos, 'Mindbomb' references a line from the movie 'Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian' and 'The Aconda' references a line from the TV show 'The Adventures of Lano and Woodley'.
