02. Relaxed In Orbit (Feat. Jordan)
Just be whatever he said, I'll forget everything. I'll wipe my mind clean, just for you to give it all back.

Oh, wow! I love them! As in, I might stay up all night and burn them.

Well, if you loved someone like her, you'd get it; she's all that's in your mind. And if you lost someone like her, you'd get it; her ghost gets in and haunts you from inside.

Just do whatever he said, I'll appreciate the better things in life. And now the sunset has got me shaking. I won't hear the voice of reason.

You will never take me alive. I'll fight this war through the day and the night. I'm going to find a place to go and just ruin everything. I'm outside your house in the night. I hear voices screaming, "The way to end this is to set fire to it all".

03. I'm Going to Rome
Message received, I hear you loud and clear. Although I am slightly confused by how you travelled this distance. But who am I to question?

Maybe I will see you face to face. So, I'll just sit here and wait. I'm wishing for the time to go quicker but the days go on and on.

It's all too safe. It's time to take a chance now.

I'll see you when it's over. I have things that they need me to take care of. I'll meet you here when it's over. Until then, I'll be fighting my own battles.

Well, I know that I'll be all you need to rely on. Do you really want to know if I can take a bullet like a soldier? Well, find a gun and you'll find out. I have so many reasons why I should be there. Like, 1, 5 and 9 are "Can you take me with you, because I need this?" But the list goes on and on.

They set you up. It's time to choose your weapon.

With the brightest light you have ever seen, the five of us declare war on this galaxy.

04. Joe Devola
The stars align and the things you built fall down. Then, I will try to fix you when you're down. Well, I'll try.

So, don't hold back all the things you wish you said. Don't hold them inside.

I guess it's too late. You've got me scared that this is happening. Now, it's too late. You've got me scared that this is happening.

So, take a pen and write down what you're seeing. Take an insight deep into your mind. Is this a game? Well, that's a shame. Because every word you wrote down will ring loud inside my head.

This is your last chance to figure it out.

This is your last chance to figure it out. This is my last chance to figure it out.

05. 46 Long
Your light is something I never want to be without. Oh, darling. I came home with nothing. I pray that I can bring myself to believe that you're right here.

My name's on your street. It will stay there until it washes off. Oh, darling. Unfamiliar around me is all I ever know when I'm with you, or on my way.

I know the things you say are true; but you're just so damn confusing. Until you change your mind, I'll be outside hanging on to every word you've said.

I just don't want to spend another day of my life without you.

So, do me a favour. Place your hands around this honest heart. Oh, darling. Your light surrounds me. It takes hold of everything I want to be and all I am.

Let's move the earth. I'll take over the storm clouds. I'll control everything it is.

06. Lightyears
You left me waiting inside a storm. This room is just as bland as before. There's no moon out tonight, so the stars won't burn that bright. And I will never fall in love again.

I board the ship on which we will fly. The pilot turns to say his goodbyes. I say, "Why that look on your face? We're going to a better place, now that I will never fall in love again".

I know it hurts, but I will try. We paint our name across the skies. All these things I say and the reason I'm going away is so I will never fall in love again.

I see the atmosphere from way up here. The way the room shakes tells me we are near. This may seem like the end but one day I'll learn to dream again now that I will never fall in love again.

The floor is cold now that we arrive. I'm scared that this reflects how I feel inside. I hate that all the things you'd say still hurt from lightyears away. So, I will never fall in love again.

There will be no sun in this town, so I'll have nothing to revolve around, now that I will never fall in love again.

This place will have no light, so I won't have to live by sight, now that I will never fall in love again.

Do you remember that time that we claimed a star as yours and mine? Now, every time I see that star in the sky, I'll try to believe in something. But I will never fall in love again.

07. Supernova Fridays
I'm done with dreaming and I'm done with creating all these worlds when I know that nothing I make can amount to anything you say.

And I'm done with sleeping and I'm done with climbing up these walls. Outside, I say that I'm OK. But inside I long for the day that I will always have you.

I'm done with existing because every day is a day I'm without you. And you're all that runs through my veins. So, I'm done with existing.

And I'm done with breathing because every breath is a smokey cloud. And all I could think of today was how I long for the day that I will always have you.

I'm done with seeing because every colour is a reminder of you. And I'm done with all the things I see. So, I'm done with seeing.

And I'm done with hearing because every sound I hear is the sound of you. And I listened to all the things you said, without getting around.

"I'll tear it up" is the same thing I would say to bring me close to you. But I'm still alive today. Just bring me now to the same place that you'll be and tell me to wait and I'll long for the day.

08. I Found a Home on Sunny Hill
A long time ago, inside my head, lived my younger self. And he thought that life was much simpler, and so did everyone else.

Those days would last forever; we'd stay out 'til the sky went black. And now time has raced ahead and I'd give anything to go back.

I wish to be up there, you see. So, take me there, I live for that day. Someday.

And I still live by the words you said: "It's about what you give and not what you get". Someday.

And, yesterday I met a man who had let himself inside. And he said he was there to claim the part of me that had died.

So, I told that undertaker, "Undertaker, please drive slow."

09. OMG (Feat. Toby)
If I can speak without you wasting me, well, I'd have a lot to say. Like, how could something made so perfectly make me feel worse than I ever have before?

You were my sun I used to rotate around but now the skies are empty and its darker than you'll ever know.

And now it's quiet here as I spin around. You said you'd never leave but I can't find you. Now, when the time comes, you will know who I am.

Oh, my God, with a single word you could destroy everything inside my world. So, with all I have, I pray you say it.

You said the rainbow was a sign that you'd never flood this world of mine but I can see the seas on the horizon. Was I right?

10. Mindbomb
So, what happened to you? My thoughts chase as I try to hide. Smoke clouds my view. Oh, I gave my life and now I'm dead inside.

But as the lights turn out, I wait for my hands to tremble. I start to fear that I will feel something.

But as we age, we realise we're too far gone. But you'll still haunt me in my dreams.

The sun shines through my window, yet I feel no warmth. You have no clue. Oh, I'm snow and wind on this pleasant day.

And as the morning comes, I'll start to pray that this is the end. And start to wonder why you won't stop this.

Six years and several days; they mean nothing to you. Now, I'm not convinced that my life is now better because better isn't better if there's nothing to compare it to.

11. The Aconda
Hold me back for just one more day or I'll be the silver lining that rains on your parade. Instead, I'll let gravity do its thing and pull me down.

I'm so scared that now it's too late. I've tried to do without but it's just not the same. All of this just feels so empty with you not around.

You seem well. I pray that it's just your exterior lying. As long as all seems well, "Onwards and upwards" is all they'll say.

You still seem miles away. My night feels so empty, though my days feel the same. And now, all I can hear is the sound of silence.

You still seem set in your ways. I'll tie you to a railroad; maybe then you'll co-operate. And when your night turns from noise to silence, you'll savour it.

And then the skies begin to separate. I'll shine you through the middle and wipe the clouds away. Because days like this, they just seem to add up and bring me down.

My mouth has no words to say. But I wish I could change that. Oh, God, the things I'd say to make you feel something. Or anything at all.

"When I started the 'By Design' project, I had no intention of making a band. I wanted to write electronic music, like artists like Moby. But I couldn't help writing these heavier, rockier, chaotic, genre-fusing songs. At that time, I hadn't written an album before, so I decided to commit to fully express this creative vision and write the best album I could. And so, 'Spaces' was born."

Release trivia

By Design was originally intended to be a soft electronic project. This is part of the reason why 'Spaces' has such a strong electronic influence.

'Spaces' is a conceptual album that details a man's journey through a relationship, its breakdown and the trauma that follows. In the story, the character receives a message from another planet, telling him that he's destined for something bigger. In 'Lightyears' we hear the story of the character travelling to the other planet to move away from his problems, only to find that his problems have followed him across the universe.

There are many references to TV shows, movies, music and real life references in the album's song names. For example, 'Joe Devola' references a character from Seinfeld, '46 Long' references the title of the second episode of The Sopranos, 'Mindbomb' references a line from the movie 'Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian' and 'The Aconda' references a line from the TV show 'The Adventures of Lano and Woodley'.
